Middleton Crescent, Beeston

Two planning applications which have been submitted to the council regarding Middleton Crescent in Beeston North are causing concern for local residents. An application relating to number 5 Middleton Crescent is to demolish the existing building and construct a care home. This at the moment is only at outline stage, and so the details are yet to be determined. the other application is at 7A Middleton Crescent, to use land at the back of the house to build 10 new houses and 14 apartments.

These applications have only just been received by the council and will need to be evaluated. Local residents will be written to to seek their views on the scheme, although many have already contacted their local councillors Steve Carr and Adele Brunton to express their concerns. Steve and Adele will ensure that the planning officers are fully aware of these, and that these views are taken into account. In due course this application will come to the Development Control Committee for a decision to be made. Members will need to consider whether the proposed scheme is appropriate in the area, and again the views of local residents will be given due consideration.

Strange Claims of the Far Right

The ultra-right wing BNP have delivered a leaflet across Kimberley accusing the Liberal Democrats of issuing a slanderous leaflet about them. This really surprised us as we haven't mentioned the BNP at all in a leaflet in Kimberley. Our Focus leaflets are extremely popular with local residents, and copies of recent ones are available on the Focus page of teh web site if anyone wants to look at them. We did have residents contact us after the BNP's false claims worried that they had missed a Focus leaflet. Don't worry, you haven't.

Council Calls For Rail Improvements

Lib-Dem led Broxtowe Borough Council is working with East Midlands Trains, the new franchise holder for the Midland Mainline and Central Trains routes, to bring about improvements for rail users in the borough. Amongst the initiatives being discussed are improved car parking at Beeston Station (the provision of marked bays being the first sign of this and certainly a big improvement on the previous arrangements), renovations to the shelters at Beeston, and improved rail services from both Beeston and Attenborough. The announcement by East Midlands trains that they want to run faster services from Nottingham to London is excellent news, although again this only represents a first step.

Former broxtowe Member to run for Leadership

The Lib-Dem Home Affairs spokesperson, Nick Clegg MP, a former member of the Broxtowe local party, is announcing today that he will run for the leadership of the Liberal Democrats. Mr Clegg, who has already been installed as favourite by the bookies and who has attracted the support of many high profile figures within the party, was a member of the Broxtowe local party from 1998 to 2002, whilst he was an MEP for the East Midlands. He transferred his membership to the Sheffield Hallam constituency after being selected as their parliamentary candidate, and subsequently became the MP for that constituency. We wish Nick well in his leadership campaign.

Lib-Dems call for better police data

At last nights Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership meeting the Lib-Dems called for better data to be made available on police operations. Statistics are currently provided showing the number of stop and searches carried out by the police, together with the number of overall arrests, but these tell only part of the story. Speaking at the meeting Cllr David Watts said "These figures give us some details, but they don't tell us what the end outcome was. We know the police did 60 searches of people, but how many of these resulted in something being found. We know the number of people arrested, but how many of those led to a charge or caution. If people were charged how many were convicted. Without this information we cannot properly monitor how effectively the police are operating in broxtowe."
