The Liberal Democrat Manifesto for Europe

These days there are many issues that cannot be tackled just by taking action at home. Making a difference on climate change, international crime and the economy means that we have to work with our European neighbours to deliver effective international action.

That's just commonsense.

Sadly not all parties agree.

The Conservatives and UKIP want to isolate Britain from Europe. They have opposed international action to help cut crime, tackle climate change and help the economy.

That's just wrong.

With Labour's ineffectiveness in Europe and incompetence at home, more and more people are turning to the Liberal Democrats.

Liberal Democrat MEPs have a strong record of supporting international action on crime, the environment and the economy.

Thanks to European action backed by the Liberal Democrats, thousands of suspected criminals have been arrested. New laws have been passed to clean up our air and water. Thousands of new jobs have been created across Britain.

Working with our neighbours makes Britain stronger. Isolation will make Britain poorer.

In the European Elections on 4th June, only a vote for the Liberal Democrats will deliver international action that helps people across Britain.

By Election Candidate Chosen

The Lib-Dem candidate for the by election in Beeston North is Barbara Carr, wife of Steve who will be standing for re-election to the County Council on the same day. The by election is necessary as Adele Brunton has had to stand down for personal reasons.

Warren Arms Stapleford

The conserted efforts of Stapleford Liberal Democrats have ensured that inappropriate plans for a replacement building for the Warren Arms on Derby Road were thrown out by the council's Development Control Committee last night.

Cllr Brian Wombwell (Stapleford North) arranged for the plans, which officers wanted to approve, to be considered by the committee. Cllr John Longdon (Stapleford North) and Cllr Stan Heptinstall (Stapleford and Bramcote County Councillor) were amongst those who spoke and voted against the scheme. All pointed out that the proposed building was unsuited to the location and would not enhance the street scene on Derby Road.

The Warren Arms is in fact in Stapleford South West ward, represented by two Labour councillors. What did they do to stop this scheme - absolutely nothing. They raised no objections to the scheme. They didn't ask for the committee to debate the scheme, and at last nights meeting neither of them even bothered to turn up.

Disgraceful Tories

The Conservatives in Beeston have been distributing a leaflet falsly claiming that former councillor Adele Brunton resigned because she "hated" the Liberal Democrats. This is wholly untrue. Adele stepped down from the Council for personal reasons, which we wanted to remain private, but she remains a committed and paid up member of the Liberal Democrats. Adele has sent the following reply to the Tory leaflet:

"I am a paid up member of the Liberal Democrat Party to this day and intend to remain so.

I have stood down primarily for personal reasons, and serious health and bereavement issues affecting my closest family which have been ongoing for over 20 months prior to my resignation.

If any leaflet suggests that I have resigned because "I hate the Liberal Democrats", this is a clear mispresentation of my circumstances, and I am still at a time of bereavement and loss. Also, whoever produced/authorized this leaflet, has not spoken to me directly, and therefore its credibility is totally unfounded. This is an unwelcome leaflet which has caused upset and offence to me and my former Beeston Councillor colleagues, especially Steve Carr.

I entirely endorse our new Liberal Democrat Borough Candidate, for Beeston North, as I continue to support your"s and my existing County Councillor Steve Carr.

I would urge anyone who has received this Conservative leaflet to dismiss it as opportunistic and sensational, and without consideration to my circumstances.

I might also care to remind all that in the 2007 Borough Elections, the Conservative Candidate did NOT stand in his local ward of Beeston North, but in Stapleford: so much can be questioned about this candidate"s recent consistency and loyalty to Beeston and Beeston North."

We hope that Beeston residents will be reassured by this and that it will make any who were going to support the Conservatives think again.

On a lighter note the same Tory leaflet claimed that the Lib-Dems could not win in Beeston North, ignoring the fact that we hold the current county seat with over 60% of the vote, as well as holding all four borough seats that comprise the county division. Oh dear Mr Cameron.
